Blackpink, a South Korean girl group, released their second studio album, Born Pink, on September 16, 2022 via YG Entertainment and Interscope Records. It was the first full-length album the group had released since 2020’s The Album. Several producers, including Teddy Sinclair, Willy Sinclair, Bekuh Boom, R. Born Pink was imagined by Blackpink as “the essence” of the group; various genres were combined and hip-hop sound served as inspiration for the album’s sound.

Album : THE ALBUM [8 SONGS • 24 MINUTES • OCT 02 2020]

Since their 2016 debut, this is the group’s first full-length composition. Blackpink collaborated with a range of producers, including Teddy, Tommy Brown, R. Tee, Steven Franks, and 24, to record more than ten new songs for the album. Only eight songs—”Ice Cream” with Selena Gomez and “Bet You Wanna” with Cardi B—were included on the final tracklist. YG Entertainment formed Blackpink, a South Korean girl group made up of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group’s name can also be stylized as BLɅϽKPIИK. The “biggest girl group in the world” is regarded as one of the pioneers of the Korean Wave and the most successful Korean girl group worldwide. Their aesthetic is linked to the “girl crush” notion in K-pop, which delves into themes of self-assurance and female empowerment.

Blackpink made their debut in August 2016 with the release of their single album Square One, which included the number-one hits “Whistle” and “Boombayah” on the US Billboard World Digital Songs chart and the Gaon Digital Chart in South Korea, respectively. The single album Square Two, whose song “Playing with Fire” became the first by a Korean girl group to chart on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, came next in November. With the release of “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” (2018), the group broadened their global appeal. It became the first Korean female group’s song to both enter the UK Singles Chart and receive an American certification. Its music video is still the most viewed by a Korean group to date and was the first to reach one and two billion views on YouTube. The music videos for “Kill This Love” (2019) and “How You Like That” (2020) broke five Guinness World Records, and each set a record for the most views in a single day of release.

With “Ice Cream” (2020), Blackpink reached the 13th spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the top spot on the US Billboard 200 with “Born Pink” (2022). She is the highest-charting female Korean act overall. Blackpink’s studio albums The Album (2020) and Born Pink, which were the first to sell more than one million and two million copies, respectively, both shattered the record for the best-selling female album in South Korea history. “Born Pink” broke two records as the first album by a Korean girl group to top both the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200. It was also the first album by a girl group to reach number one on the Billboard 200 since Danity Kane in 2008. The lead single from the album, “Pink Venom” (2022), became the first by a girl group to top the Billboard Global 200 and the first song by a Korean group to top Australia’s ARIA Singles Chart.

Throughout their career, Blackpink has broken a number of records. They were the first Asian act to headline Coachella, and their Born Pink World Tour (2022–2023) became the highest-grossing concert tour by a female group. They are the most followed and streamed girl group on Spotify, and they have the most viewed and subscribed music artist channel on YouTube. A number of Golden Disc Awards, Billboard Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards are among Blackpink’s other honors. Notably, the group won Group of the Year for the first time in a girl group’s history. They were Time’s 2022 Entertainer of the Year and the first girl group to be featured in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asia. Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in recognized the group as a global phenomenon that helped spread K-pop worldwide, and Forbes Korea ranked them among the top three most powerful celebrities in South Korea in 2019–23.

Blackpink’s discography features a range of other genres, including R&B, Arabic music, ballad, disco, and rock, but their music is primarily rooted in EDM and pop with elements of hip hop and trap. “Bold rapping, powerful singing, and chic styling” have been used to characterize Blackpink’s sound. They frequently incorporate bass drops into their songs, particularly right before the chorus, which some publications have identified as a distinctive aspect of their sound. According to Jisoo, who spoke with Rolling Stone about their creative process, the members are “involved from the beginning,” “building the blocks,” “adding this or that feeling,” and “exchanging feedback.” Billboard described Blackpink’s music as having “rewrote the definition of K-pop and their beauty, It’s for them not for anyone else.”

When Blackpink first started out, they said they wanted to “show [their] own unique color” and aspire to be like labelmate 2NE1. In 2023, the group members discussed how their upbringing through the music of TLC and the Spice Girls inspired them during a Carpool Karaoke episode. Blackpink has acknowledged a number of other musicians as musical influences, such as Selena Gomez, Cardi B, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande.

Similar to their name, Blackpink sought to communicate two distinct ideas about their musicality: the “black” side of the group represented their more provocative “girl crush” persona, while the “pink” side represented their more colorful and feminine persona. “There’s two colors that represented us the most ’cause we’re very girly but at the same time we’re very savage too,” Rosé said in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel. She cited their song “Pretty Savage” as the one that best captured the group’s identity because “it kind of goes with ‘black pink.'” Jennie provided further details about the group’s identity during the press conference honoring the August 2022 release of “Pink Venom”: “We try to express various messages through songs of various genres but Blackpink is always confident and full of confidence, I thought we were the closest.”

According to Insider, Blackpink encompasses the “girl crush” image in K-pop, having “burst] onto the K-pop scene with a set of singles that set them on a path to becoming the ambassadors of the ‘girl crush’ concept,” showcasing their confidence, sexiness, and inspirational assurance. After “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” was released, Billboard dubbed them “K-pop’s most visible representatives” of girl crush. Jung Deok-hyeon, a cultural critic, observed that Blackpink developed a “confident” persona and had “a solid fandom centered on women.” The group frequently addresses themes of romance, breakups, toxic relationships, female empowerment, and independence in their lyrics.

Thirteen Circle Chart Music Awards, eleven MAMA Awards, seven Golden Disc Awards, eleven Guinness World Records, five Melon Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, three People’s Choice Awards, four Seoul Music Awards, a Billboard Music Award, an MTV Europe Music Award, and a Teen Choice Award are just a few of Blackpink’s many honors. They are the first Korean girl group to be nominated for a Brit Award and to win an MTV Video Music Award.

Blackpink broke five Guinness World Records after the release of “How You Like That” and its music video on June 26, 2020. These records included the most views for a YouTube video in its first 24 hours of release (86.3 million views) and the most viewers for a live YouTube video premiere (1.66 million peak concurrent viewers). With more than 60 million subscribers, Blackpink was granted the Guinness World Record for the most-subscribed band on YouTube in 2021. Blackpink received three more Guinness World Records in 2022: the first for winning the Best Metaverse Performance category for the first time at the MTV Video Music Awards, and the second and third for being the first K-pop girl group to have their second studio album, Born Pink, reach the top of the US and UK album charts, respectively. With more than 8.8 billion Spotify streams, Blackpink was granted the Guinness World Record for the most-streamed female group in 2023. With more than 30.15 billion views, they were also granted the Guinness World Record for the most popular music channel on YouTube among a collective.

Blackpink members were made honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by King Charles III in November 2023. Yoon Suk Yeol, the president of South Korea, was also present at the investiture, which took place at Buckingham Palace.
